I suspected it wouldn't keep the belt tight. I found the aftermarket version didn't have the same 'throw' distance as the original. I first removed the whole assembly to buy a replacement. Our X3 2005 had the old mechanical tensioner ( not the one with a piston). Didn't need a new tensioner because the worn bearings were in the pulley itself. I found that I could simply remove the old pulley using a Torx driver. Note that BMW wanted to replace the whole tensioner assembly with a hydraulic one because they no longer carry the mechanical tensioner parts. None of these jobs required me to remove the radiator fan. PS> I also replaced the tensioner pulley (not the tensioner assembly) and both belts during the same job. Ran engine around the block (low refrigerant light came on)Ģ7. Topped off the radiator with 50/50 anti-freeze and distilled waterĢ3. Replaced the clip that secured the sensor adapterĢ2. Attached the sensor adapter to the thermostatġ8. Placed the clips on the hoses to secure them to the thermostatġ7. I attached the hoses to the thermostatġ6. I bolted the new thermostat on to the blockġ5. I put a little anti-freeze on the gasket of the new thermostatġ4. I removed the four bolts that held the thermostat in placeġ3. I loosened the bracket on the block that held the top of the thermostatġ1. I removed the hoses from the thermostat (more fluid spilled out, need a tray to catch it)ġ0. I removed the clips on the radiator hoses to the thermostatĩ. ![]() I removed the clip that held the thermostat sensor plugĨ. I drained fluid from the radiator (about a gallon came out)Ħ. I removed the shield from under the engineĥ. I opened the bleeder value on the coolant expansion tankĤ. I removed the air filter box which gave me more roomģ. I removed the fan shroud which gave me more room to workĢ. Couple of things I learned along the way:ġ. I purchased a new thermostat, replaced the old one, reset the code, and all is well. Apparently, it failed open (the car was not overheating). I had the car in the dealership for other issues and they indicated the thermostat needed replacement. I picked up an error code of P0599 also on a 2005 X3 2.5l (E83, M45B25).
